Abstract
Objective: To understand the meanings that expert key informants, professionals in career guidance, assign to the horizons and challenges of career guidance practice in Costa Rica, based on their perspectives and experiences.
Methodology: A naturalistic, qualitative, phenomenological study. Fifty-one informants from different sectors participated: university faculty, professional association authorities, practitioners from the Ministry of Public Education, private schools, the National Learning Institute, public universities, and the College of Career Guidance Professionals. Data collection combined four strategies: an online survey, two in-person discussion forums with international expert participation, small-group feedback sessions, and semi-structured interviews. Analysis was thematic, grounded in interpretive symbolic interactionism.
Results: Five axial categories emerged: the relationship between personal development processes and the labor market; innovation, professional updating, and technology integration; skills development and its relationship to the labor market; structural challenges in the current state of career guidance; and the need for career guidance beginning in childhood. From these categories, urgent horizons and challenges for the discipline in Costa Rica are identified.
Conclusions: Career guidance in Costa Rica faces long-standing horizons (coverage from childhood, the consolidation of the vocational as an identity component, and ongoing professional development) alongside persistent and emerging challenges, including administrative overload and the critical incorporation of artificial intelligence. The evidence points to the need to conceive career guidance as a process-oriented practice, theoretically grounded and committed to social justice.
